Paris, Capital of Fashion

Our journey blending fashion and culture begins with a magical place steeped in history. In July 1974, Yves Saint Laurent's brand moved into its famous address: a Napoleon III mansion close to the Alma bridge. The building, transformed later into the Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation to promote the work of the great fashion designer, recently reopened as the Musée Yves Saint Laurent à Paris. The spaces, which once were the reception halls and fitting rooms, have been adapted to show the universe of this exceptional creator: his iconic outfits which have defined the YSL style, as well as his sources of inspiration and his emblematic jewelry,

A few steps away from this new museum, the Palais Galliera offers the opportunity to discover the Fortuny style which is still amazingly topical. With hundreds of pieces from the collections of the Museo del Traje in Madrid, the Museo Fortuny in Venice and Palais Galliera in Paris, the exhibition focuses on Mariano Fortuny’s wide range of inspiration and inventive talent. He is a legendary figure of the renewal of women's fashion at the end of the nineteenth century. An ardent advocate of the liberation of the woman’s body, Fortuny was able to propose timeless models, with straight and fluid lines that still appear absolutely modern. Famous for his Knossos shawl and for the pleats of his silk Delphos dress, he rekindled Greek antiquity in his creations with refined prints and he designed clothes for both Jeanne Lanvin and Denise Poiret. Miyake and Valentino are here among the contemporary designers who perpetuate the style of his models.

Walking along the Seine, we will stop at the Grand Palais which honors Hermès, one of the great French couture houses. This is not for their annual international horse riding competition, but to pay tribute to Leïla Menchari, a designer in charge of the legendary Paris saddler’s showcases for more than fifty years, and to let us discover her elegant and enchanting worlds. This creator of Tunisian origin has allowed us to travel and share her dreams through decors set as theatrical scenes.

Let’s continue along the quays and Jardin des Tuileries for an exceptional meeting with a dream fashion designer. For the 70-year anniversary of the famous house Christian Dior, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs invites us to a take a touching journey through the universe of the founder who brilliantly reinvented the post-war female silhouette with his new-look style. His talented successors, including Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre, John Galliano, Raf Simons and the current Maria Grazia Chiuri, are also presented. Beyond staging hundreds of iconic dresses, the exhibition showcases sketches, photos, fashion magazine covers along with fashion trend accessories and perfume bottles.

These are the current must-see events in Paris for fashion aficionados!
