Several Paris museums are putting on exhibitions to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Yves Saint Laurent's first ever fashion show, 29th January 1962 at 30bis rue Spontini in Paris, and reveal the designer's connection with Art and public collections. A selection of iconic designs and works which inspired his creations while celebrating fashion and Art.
Charles Le Brun's bright gold designs for the Sun King at the Louvre's Galerie d’Apollon. An exhibition revealing YSL's work as an artist of his era, playing an active part in the evolution of 20th style and art de vivre at the Pompidou Centre. The models have been set up with works by Mondrian ("The first I dared to approach in 1965, attracted by the rigour of his work" to quote the designer) Pop Art ("Pop Art was the expression of my generation, how could I resist?"), Matisse and Sonia Delaunay. The Musée Picasso opted to place models from the 1979 autumn-winter collection in the Salon Jupiter opposite works by the Spanish artist who inspired their design, a tribute to both Picasso and Diaghilev. A second collection from 1988 is set up similarly with Braque and Picasso cubist works.
The Musée d’Art Moderne uses contrast by an alternation of massive halls and small rooms to highlight the colours and patterns inspired by Alain Jacquet's prints and Bonnard and Sonia Delaunay's paintings.
The Musée d'Orsay decided to go with a Proustian approach regarding the hidden symbols in the designer's models and how he played with traditional masculin/feminin dress codes. Lastly, the Musée Yves Saint Laurent has delved into design and corporate archives to explain how Yves Saint Laurent managed to integrate his personality into the world of Paris fashion from day one and renewed his work through Art to become "high-end fashion's most artistic designer", with shows of his work at the New York Met during his lifetime before becoming famous in Paris.
After the Orsay exhibition, we recommend lunch or dinner at the restaurant in the historically listed station building, dating back somewhere between Napoléon III and the Third Republic. Traditional dishes served in 19th century settings.
