The Queen of Poland is coming to the Château de Prye!
Her destiny could have unfolded peacefully in the Nivernais region, but it ultimately played out on the thrones of Europe. For the fifth consecutive year, on April 11, the Château de Prye will dedicate a day to Marysienka, Queen of Poland, whose destiny had French roots and whose life was the stuff of romance.
From Nevers to Wilanów, from the Château de Prye to the thrones of Europe.
Marie-Casimire de La Grange d’Arquien, known as Marysienka, was born in Nevers in 1641. At a young age, she became a lady-in-waiting to Marie-Louise de Gonzague-Nevers, then Queen of Poland and wife of King Ladislaus IV and later of his successor John II Casimir. Later, she met Jean Sobieski, whom she married; he ascended to the Polish throne in 1672, making her the queen consort. Her extraordinary life story can still be read today through the numerous letters exchanged with her husband, as well as in the accounts of her journey to Rome following his death.
These stories will come to life for a day in Nevers and at the Château de Prye. After a tour of the city, tracing the history of the Nevers nobility that went on to become part of the European monarchy, the stories will be passionately recounted at the Château de Prye by Magdalena du Bourg de Bozas, the estate’s owner, and by Françoise Joulié, owner of the Château de Bordes. The day will conclude with a tasting of the “Marysienka” cake, which participants are invited to bake and bring.
