Although Nature has been making a strong comeback in modern Art, Eva Jospin's take on nature is nothing like you have ever seen. Since 2016, a decisive year in her young career - a resident at the Villa Medicis in Rome and major works on show in the Louvre's Cour Carrée - she has become one of the most important French artists of her generation. The lethargic periods of confinement these last two years do not seem to have affected her; she created a sumptuous 350m² embroidered panorama for Dior's fashion show, did an exhibition in Giverny and at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature. The latter's particular intimate decor provided the ideal backdrop for her works. Eva's favourite medium has been exclusively cardboard for quite some time, which she describes as "grooved" or corrugated and which with she creates dense and mysterious forests. She puts several layers together and then starts chiselling out trunks, intertwined woody vines and leaves.
But she never paints them to make a theatrical illusion - that's the paradox of her work – it stays as it is to reveal all the meticulous details. She has started adding other elements to her forests, such as pieces of eroded stratified rocks, some with holes, and classical architecture in ruins as the basis of authentic, dreamlike scenery, still all made from cardboard and practically monochrome. As the museum gave her "carte blanche", Eva invited three other artists who share her values about our times and the fragility of existence: Faustine Cornette de Saint-Cyr, Aurore d’Estaing and Guillaume Krattinger - works on show in this charming museum's brand new halls.
You will be spoilt for choice when wondering where to go for dinner in the Marais district. Why not try out Cherper, the new restaurant opened by the Perchoir restaurant team in the famous Crédit Municipal bank building. It's famous because this is where people used to pawn jewellery when they had lost money gambling. The Crédit Municipal has moved and the magnificent dome now houses a dining bar serving exotic cocktails in a trendy atmosphere where you are free to dance. The spot is stunning, with high ceilings and plant life, the menu is short but full of spicy surprises and after 10pm, they turn up the music and the night takes on a lively Latino vibe.
