Le Bon Marché becomes a stage: Merzouki reinvents Babel

Living heritage also means watching places evolve. This winter, Le Bon Marché Rive Gauche – the world’s first department store, founded in 1852 by Marguerite and Aristide Boucicaut and located just a few steps from Hôtel des Saints Pères – is transforming into a performance hall. As night falls, the space is transformed...

Until December 31, from 8:45 p.m., the store reopens its doors to offer a different kind of experience: discovering the work of Mourad Merzouki, a French choreographer and leading figure in contemporary dance and the hip-hop movement. For years, his art has drawn on multiple disciplines — circus, martial arts, and video. His interpretation of the Babel myth is positive, optimistic, and deeply moving, performed by ten artists — dancers and acrobats — set to a score that blends classical and electronic music, composed by Marc de Barre. Styles and art forms intertwine to create a unique choreography, unfolding both on the ground and in the air, culminating in a luminous finale: the sharing of a universal language — the language of movement. Captivating!
