Château de Bourron : the legacy of Fontainebleau

Let’s take a closer look at the meticulous work carried out by the Compagnons du Devoir during the restoration of the grand staircase at the Château de Bourron in Seine-et-Marne.

Château de Bourron.

As one ascends the steps of the spectacular grand staircase at the Château de Bourron today, it is hard to imagine the extent of craftsmanship and inventiveness that were required to restore this masterpiece to its former glory. Considered by architects of historical monuments as the «little brother» of the Fontainebleau staircase, the majestic double-revolution staircase, shaped like a «horseshoe,» was on the verge of collapsing when restoration work began in 2018. The building’s team discovered that water was seeping into the staircase, posing a threat to its structure. The restoration, both a construction site and a grand adventure, engaged the teams of artisans from the Compagnons du Devoir for nine months and was made possible thanks to the DRAC (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs), the department of Seine-et-Marne, and numerous private sponsors. Since then, the Cordon family, the château’s owners, once again welcomes their guests to this historic gem, conveniently accessible by train from the Gare de Lyon. The latest projectẒ The addition of a fitness room and Nordic baths, creating a triptych that combines nature, well-being, and heritage.
