The buildings inhabited by the canons of the cathedral were built during two successive periods. The cloister, reached through the Archbishop's courtyard, was built during two different campaigns. The first section, the Romanesque North and East corridors, was built in the 12th century. The second campaign during the 14th century completed the cloister with the Gothic corridors on the South and West sides. Around this common space were located the rooms reserved for the canons : the refectory or dining hall, the dormitories, the chapter room where assemblies were held. The cloister itself is decorated with pillars and capitals recalling the Passion and the Resurrection of Christ, as well as the important saints of the Arles church. In the Gothic section, the capitals illustrate episodes about the legend of Saint-Trophime, taken from a poem written in Provençal during the 13th century, the "Roman de Saint-Trophime".
